Keywords: Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, silver carp, phytoplankton biomass, eutrophication, salinization, biomeliorant, non-traditional biomanipulation, Aral Sea region, Karakalpakstan, ichthyofauna. 1. Introduction The Aral Sea crisis, widely regarded as one of the most severe anthropogenic environmental disasters of the twentieth century, has fundamentally transformed the hydrological and ecological landscape of the Karakalpakstan Republic. Since the 1960s, the diversion of Amu Darya and Syr Darya river flows for intensive irrigation has caused the Aral Sea to lose more than 74% of its surface area and approximately 90% of its volume, while salinity has increased from an original 10 g/L to values exceeding 100 g/L in the remnant South Aral Sea basin (Micklin, 2010; MDPI, 2025). These transformations have cascaded into the deltaic lake systems of the Amu Darya — including Sudoche, Jiltirbas, and the Mo'ynoq lake complex — resulting in progressive eutrophication, elevated mineralization, and significant restructuring of ichthyofauna assemblages (Barteneva et al., 2024; Karakalpakstan Environmental Atlas, 2023).
Under these changing conditions, phytoplanktivorous filter-feeding fish represent a biologically and economically rational tool for ecosystem management. Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Valenciennes, 1844) — one of the "Four Major Chinese Carps" — is the world's most widely cultured freshwater fish, with global aquaculture production surpassing 4.7 million metric tonnes annually (FAO, 2024; ScienceDirect, 2024). Its unique gill-raker filtration apparatus enables selective consumption of phytoplankton NUKUS · 2026
particles ranging from 10 μm to several millimetres in diameter, positioning it as an effective agent for non-traditional biomanipulation (NTB) in eutrophic water bodies (Amjad Yaqoob et al., 2024; Liu & Zhang, 2016). Despite its widespread global use, scientific data on silver carp population dynamics and ecological performance within the degraded lake ecosystems of X A L Q A R O I L M I Y- A M A L I Y K O N F E R E N S I YA
Karakalpakstan remain scarce. This study addresses that knowledge gap by providing the first systematic multi-site bio-ecological assessment of H. molitrix across three representative natural water bodies in the Aral Sea region over a two-year monitoring period (2023–2025). 2. Material and methods 2.1. Study Sites The study was conducted across three natural lake systems within the Amu Darya delta region of Karakalpakstan Republic, Uzbekistan (Figure 1, approximate coordinates: 43°N, 59°E). Sudoche Lake (S ≈ 50,000 ha) is a large shallow brackish « O ‘ Z B E K I S T O N O L I M A AY O L L A R I N I N G M A M L A K AT T A R A Q Q I Y O T I G A Q O ‘ S H AY O T G A N H I S S A S I »
lake forming part of the Sudoche lake group adjacent to the Khodjakul–Karadjar complex, functioning as an important fishery and migratory bird habitat. Jiltirbas Lake (formerly Zhiltirbas Bay) is a deltaic brackish water body with relatively stable freshwater inflow from irrigation drainage. Mo'ynoq Lakes represent residual water bodies on the former Aral Sea shoreline experiencing the most severe mineralization gradient of all study sites. All three water bodies are currently utilized for artisanal fisheries (Karakalpakstan.travel, 2024). 2.2. Field Sampling and Laboratory Procedures Field sampling was conducted seasonally (spring, summer, autumn) from May 2023 to September 2025. Silver carp specimens were collected using standardized multi-mesh gillnets (mesh sizes: 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 mm; net dimensions: 25 m × 1.5 m per unit; n ≥ 30 specimens per site per season), consistent with CEN EN 14757 standard protocol for lake fish sampling. Total length (TL, ± 1 mm), body weight (BW, ± 10 g), sex, and maturity stage (I–VI scale) were recorded in situ. The proportional ichthyomass share was calculated from concurrent multi-species sampling across the same net sets. Phytoplankton biomass was determined from integrated water column samples (0.5 m depth intervals) using standard Utermöhl inverted microscopy following APHA (2017) methodology, with results expressed as mg/L wet weight. Water mineralization (total dissolved solids, TDS) was measured in situ using a calibrated conductivity meter (HACH HQ40d), and pH and dissolved oxygen (YSI ProODO) were recorded simultaneously. All measurements were replicated in triplicate per site per sampling occasion.
2.3. Statistical Analysis Pearson's linear correlation coefficient (r) was computed between phytoplankton biomass and the proportional ichthyomass share of H. molitrix across all pooled seasonal data points per site. Statistical significance was assessed at α = 0.05 using two-tailed t-distribution. Descriptive statistics (mean ± SD) were NUKUS · 2026

SD = standard deviation; n ≥ 30 specimens per site per seasonal sampling occasion. 3.2. Phytoplankton–Ichthyomass Correlation Pearson's correlation analysis demonstrated a strong positive linear relationship between phytoplankton biomass and the proportional share of H. molitrix in total ichthyomass (r = 0.98, p < 0.05). Jiltirbas Lake, which exhibited the highest phytoplankton biomass (15.2 ± 2.3 mg/L), simultaneously recorded the highest silver carp representation (21.0 ± 1.9% of ichthyomass). This pattern is consistent with the bottom-up regulation hypothesis, wherein primary producer biomass constitutes the primary limiting factor for filter-feeding fish populations in polymictic shallow lakes (Chen et al., 2023; Hochstrasser & Collins, 2024).
3.3. Growth Performance Under Contrasting Salinity Regimes Sudoche Lake yielded the highest mean body weight (4.2 ± 0.6 kg), despite possessing intermediate phytoplankton biomass, suggesting that favourable thermal regime (mean summer temperature: 24.5°C) and comparatively stable water exchange dynamics contribute synergistically to somatic growth. Conversely, Mo'ynoq Lakes, characterized by the highest mineralization (10.4 g/L), exhibited the lowest mean body weight (3.5 ± 0.4 kg). Nonetheless, population viability was maintained, corroborating experimental evidence that H. molitrix activates osmotic compensatory mechanisms — including upregulation of Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase activity, SOD and CAT antioxidant enzymes, and 14-3-3 regulatory proteins — enabling physiological adaptation to brackish water conditions up to 6–12 g/L (PMC, 2022; USFWS, 2024). 4. Discussion 4.1. Non-Traditional Biomanipulation Potential NUKUS · 2026
Our findings position H. molitrix as a functionally indispensable component of the trophic cascade in Karakalpakstan's lake ecosystems. The species operates as a 'filter-pump' within the pelagic zone, directly converting phytoplankton biomass — principally cyanobacteria and green algae — into high-quality vertebrate protein. This mechanism, termed 'non-traditional biomanipulation' (NTB) by Xie & Liu X A L Q A R O I L M I Y- A M A L I Y K O N F E R E N S I YA
(2001), has been validated in a landmark whole-lake experiment at Lake Donghu (China), where intensified silver carp stocking suppressed Microcystis bloom coverage from 87% to 0% within a single growing season (ResearchGate, 2021). The eutrophication trajectory of Sudoche and Jiltirbas — driven by agricultural drainage inflows rich in nitrogen and phosphorus compounds — mirrors conditions documented in analogous shallow lake systems in East and Central Asia, where phytoplankton biomass routinely exceeds 10 mg/L during summer stratification. Critically, structural equation modelling applied to silver-carpdominated enclosures has confirmed a statistically significant negative causal effect of H. molitrix on phytoplankton biomass (β = −0.71, p < 0.001), mediated through « O ‘ Z B E K I S T O N O L I M A AY O L L A R I N I N G M A M L A K AT T A R A Q Q I Y O T I G A Q O ‘ S H AY O T G A N H I S S A S I »
direct filtration rather than nutrient cycling pathways (ScienceDirect, 2026; Liu & Xie, 1999). 4.2. Salinity Tolerance in the Context of Aral Sea Degradation The persistence of silver carp in Mo‘ynoq Lakes at mineralization levels of 10.4 g/L carries considerable management significance. Research on organochlorine pesticide and salinity contamination in Karakalpakstan documented total dissolved solids ranging from 563 to 3,852 mg/L across the region’s water bodies (MDPI, 2025), positioning our study sites within a moderate-to-elevated salinity bracket. Transcriptomic analyses of juvenile H. molitrix exposed to 6‰ brackish water demonstrated significant upregulation of osmotic stress response pathways, while antioxidant defence systems (SOD, CAT, GSH-Px) remained functionally intact, indicating capacity for sustained brackish water existence without lethal physiological compromise (PMC, 2022). The ecological implications are clear: as salinization of Karakalpakstan’s lakes continues under reduced Amu Darya inflow and climate change acceleration, H. molitrix is among the few commercially viable and ecologically functional fish species capable of persisting across the projected salinity gradient. 4.3. Energetic Efficiency and Protein Conversion From a trophic efficiency perspective, H. molitrix occupies a uniquely advantageous position by feeding at trophic level 2.0 (primary consumer of phytoplankton), thereby bypassing the energetic losses associated with zooplankton intermediary transfer (approximately 90% energy lost per trophic step under Lindemann's rule). This enables exceptionally high food conversion ratios: in pond polyculture systems, silver carp achieves FCR values of 1.2–1.8, compared to 3.5–
5.0 for carnivorous species (FAO, 2024; IAFFD, 2024). Given that global carp aquaculture produces over 25 million metric tonnes annually — with silver and bighead carps constituting the majority of non-fed aquaculture production (25.4 million tonnes in 2022) — the species' role in global food security cannot be overstated (FAO SOFIA, 2024). NUKUS · 2026
4.4. Phytoplankton Dynamics and Cyanobacterial Bloom Risk The Aral Sea remnant basin and associated deltaic lakes are at elevated risk of cyanobacterial bloom development, particularly following periods of reduced water inflow and elevated temperature. Research on Aral Sea phytoplankton dynamics has X A L Q A R O I L M I Y- A M A L I Y K O N F E R E N S I YA
documented significant shifts in community composition, with Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae emerging as dominant groups under high-salinity, nutrientenriched conditions (Barteneva et al., 2024; PMC, 2023). Silver carp selectively targets colonial and filamentous cyanobacteria — the very taxa responsible for toxic bloom events producing hepatotoxic microcystins. Studies at Lake Shichahai (Beijing) confirmed that silver carp enclosures significantly reduced Microcystis biomass relative to open lake water, though stocking density must exceed a sitespecific threshold for bloom suppression to become statistically significant (ScienceDirect, 2006; Liu et al., 2001).

1. The results of a 2023–2025 multi-site monitoring campaign confirm that H. molitrix has established self-sustaining populations in all three surveyed Karakalpakstan lakes, representing 14–21% of total ichthyomass across the gradient of phytoplankton availability (9.8–15.2 mg/L). 2. A near-perfect positive correlation (r = 0.98) between phytoplankton biomass and silver carp ichthyomass share empirically validates the species' functional dependence on pelagic primary production and its utility as a bio-indicator of trophic state. 3. The demonstrated tolerance of active populations at 10.4 g/L mineralization establishes H. molitrix as the most resilient economically significant planktivore in the Aral Sea region's lake systems, supported by molecular-level osmotic adaptive mechanisms. 4. Based on observed bio-ecological parameters, annual stocking of juvenile silver carp (yearlings, mean weight 35–50 g) at a target density of 150–200 individuals·ha⁻¹ in Jiltirbas and Sudoche Lakes is recommended. This density range, calibrated against phytoplankton carrying capacity (15.2 and 12.5 mg/L respectively), is calculated to prevent ichthyoeutrophication while achieving a projected ichthyomass yield increase of 18–24% within two growing seasons. 5. Integration of dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll-a, and temperature as continuous monitoring parameters is strongly recommended to enable adaptive management of stocking densities across the annual productivity cycle.
