Traditional teacher-centered approaches are gradually being replaced by student-centered learning models, where learners take an active role in their own educational process. One of the most important components of this transformation is the development of independent learning skills among students. Independent learning is a complex and multifaceted concept that involves self-motivation, selfregulation, critical thinking, and responsibility for one’s own learning outcomes. It enables students to become lifelong learners who can adapt to changing academic and professional environments. In this regard, online platforms have emerged as powerful tools that support and enhance independent learning. The integration of digital technologies into education has created new opportunities for students to access information, communicate with instructors, and collaborate with peers. According to Anderson (2008), online learning environments provide learners with greater flexibility and control, allowing them to take ownership of their learning process. This shift from passive to active learning is essential for developing autonomy and self-confidence. Independent learning is also connected to the theory of self-regulated learning, which emphasizes the importance of planning, monitoring, and evaluating one’s learning activities. Students who possess strong selfregulation skills are more likely to succeed in online learning environments, as they can effectively manage their time and stay motivated without constant supervision. One of the key advantages of online platforms is their ability to support self-paced learning. Students can review lessons multiple times, pause and reflect on complex concepts, and progress according to their individual learning speed. This flexibility allows learners to better understand the material and develop deeper knowledge. Moore and Kearsley (2012) highlight that distance education requires learners to take responsibility for organizing their study schedules and completing tasks independently. This responsibility helps students develop important life skills, such as time management, discipline, and accountability. Online learning offers numerous advantages that contribute to the development of independent learning skills. One of the most significant benefits is flexibility. Students are not restricted by time or location, which allows them to create their own study schedules. This is particularly beneficial for students who have other responsibilities, such

as part-time jobs or family obligations. Another advantage is accessibility. Online platforms provide access to a vast amount of information and resources that may not be available in traditional classrooms. This encourages students to explore new topics, conduct independent research, and expand their knowledge beyond the curriculum. Despite its many advantages, online learning also presents several challenges that can affect the development of independent learning skills. One of the primary challenges is the lack of direct interaction with teachers and peers. Face-to-face communication plays an important role in maintaining motivation and providing immediate feedback. In online environments, students may feel isolated or disconnected, which can reduce their engagement. Another significant challenge is distraction. Studying in a home environment can expose students to various distractions, such as social media, entertainment, and household activities. Without proper self-discipline, students may struggle to stay focused on their studies. Technical issues also pose a barrier to effective online learning. Limited access to reliable internet connections or digital devices can hinder students’ ability to participate in online courses.
