INTRODUCTION When learning English, reading and writing skills significantly enhance learners’ ability to communicate successfully. These skills are essential both for understanding the language and for expressing one's ideas in written form. Therefore, it is important to use various approaches and methods to develop these skills in English language teaching. Reading and writing skills complement each other, and developing them in parallel improves students’ overall language proficiency.
The methods used to develop reading and writing skills not only facilitate language comprehension but also serve to enhance students’ general knowledge and creativity. For example, regular reading exercises teach students new words and expressions while helping them learn about different cultures and perspectives. Encountering various writing styles and topics during reading encourages students to think more broadly and develop more creative approaches. Writing exercises, on the other hand, not only improve language skills but also strengthen students’ thinking and analytical abilities. In the writing process, students learn important skills such as establishing logical connections between ideas, structuring information properly, and writing according to different formats. Additionally, writing allows students to develop their creativity by providing a broad platform for them to express their imagination and original thoughts. One of the most effective methods for improving reading skills is cultivating a regular reading habit. Teachers should introduce students to various reading materials and provide texts that match their interests. This reinforces students’ reading habits and facilitates language comprehension. MAIN PART Applying active reading methods is crucial to help students understand what they read more deeply. Active reading involves more than just glancing at the text; it focuses on clarifying its meaning and ideas. This approach helps students grasp the structure, main idea, and purpose of the text. Active reading techniques include highlighting key points, underlining important ideas, and noting down main arguments. These techniques enable students to engage more deeply with the text and internalize it more effectively. As a result, reading becomes not just a passive reception of information but a conscious and more effective learning process. Active reading methods also develop students’ abilities to analyze texts. Analysis goes beyond reading the words — it involves evaluating the content and structure of the text. In this process, students assess the language, argumentation methods, and the author's standpoint. For instance, when reading an article, a student not only understands the information but also critically evaluates the author’s arguments and evidence. These analysis methods equip students with critical thinking skills. Consequently, they can respond to the material more analytically [5, 2]. Moreover, interpreting texts helps students express their opinions and apply personal experiences to the material. Interpretation allows readers to connect the text’s ideas to their personal knowledge and experiences. This process encourages students to both understand the meaning of the text and reflect on their inner thoughts and experiences. By sharing their opinions and participating in discussions, students enhance their language skills and gain a broader perspective. Interpreting texts teaches students to appreciate various viewpoints and fosters creative thinking. Discussing and analyzing texts helps students deepen their understanding and develop critical thinking skills. Reading analysis focuses not just on understanding the words but also the ideas, structures, and linguistic features within the text. Students can identify the main arguments, evidence, and purpose presented by the author. This deeper analysis allows them to assess the main ideas within a broader context and enhances their understanding of the text’s structure, language, and deeper intent [7, 1]. Discussion allows students to share and debate their ideas with others. Teachers should encourage students to discuss the texts they read from different perspectives and invite them to apply various methods of analysis. During discussions, students not only share their own reading experiences but also consider the opinions and approaches of others. This process enriches their way of thinking and enables them to develop a broader understanding. By participating in
discussions, students do not merely comprehend the text they have read; they also determine what it means to them personally, what ideas it evokes, and how they can apply it. As a result, discussions enhance students' language as well as their analytical thinking skills [3, 6]. While guiding these discussions, teachers should encourage students to explore different aspects of the text, such as the writing style, the author's language choices, and the main idea. This approach enables students to form their own individual opinions about the main theme of the text and to present these opinions supported by arguments during the discussion. At the same time, discussion helps students develop skills such as making judgments, constructing arguments to support their positions, and resolving debates. Discussions led by the teacher offer students a broader thinking perspective, as they are exposed to a variety of ideas and learn to evaluate information within a wider context [1, 7]. Structured writing exercises aimed at developing writing skills help students present their ideas systematically and in a logical sequence. Such an approach improves students' ability to organize their writing and allows them to manage the writing process more easily. Proper structuring of writing — identifying the introduction, development, and conclusion sections — ensures the logical flow of the text. By understanding the purpose of each part of their writing, students learn to organize their ideas appropriately. For example, in the introduction, the topic is introduced and the main thesis is stated; in the development section, detailed information about the topic is provided; and in the conclusion, the main findings or calls to action are presented. This structure enables students not only to express themselves more clearly and effectively in writing but also to better convey the purpose of their text [2, 6]. Teachers should provide students with structured training in various types of writing. Essay writing exercises enhance students’ argumentation skills and their ability to present ideas effectively. Writing lectures helps students develop the ability to provide extensive information on a given topic and to analyze it using various sources. Analytical writing, on the other hand, equips students with deeper critical thinking and analytical skills, as it requires evaluating different aspects of a particular issue. Teachers should pay special attention to teaching the structures related to these types of writing and clearly explain the distinctions between each form. Teaching students the appropriate formats and helping them apply these formats significantly accelerates the development of their writing skills [4, 7]. Additionally, structured writing exercises are beneficial for developing students' written expression skills. Writing assignments teach students how to structure their writing by considering its purpose, audience, and topic. It is important to teach students to adhere to proper and clear forms of writing within these types of texts. For example, when writing an essay, teaching students to present thesis-supporting arguments in the introduction and to elaborate on each argument in the development section strengthens their writing style. Such exercises also allow students to experiment with different writing techniques, enriching and making their written expression more effective. Moreover, regular structured writing exercises enhance students’ overall writing skills and help them produce more polished compositions [7, 8]. The feedback and revision process plays a crucial role in the development of written expression skills. Feedback provided to students allows them to improve their written work and correct language and stylistic errors. Constructive feedback from teachers and peers helps students identify the strengths in their writing and develop areas of weakness. For example, teachers can provide detailed feedback on improving the logical flow, structure, and coherence of ideas in students’ writing, as well as correcting language errors. This ensures that students develop their
writing skills more deeply. At the same time, feedback should not only aim to correct mistakes but also indicate which areas of the writing need to be further developed and help students communicate the purpose of their writing more clearly [5, 7]. Such revision processes are invaluable for developing students’ written expression skills, as they help students recognize their mistakes and avoid repeating them in future writing. In addition to receiving feedback on their own writing, students should also learn how to provide feedback on the writing of others. This enhances their analytical and evaluative skills and helps them develop a more objective approach. Giving feedback on others’ writing also improves students' language skills, as they come to understand various theories and approaches related to writing structure, style, and content. Furthermore, the practice of giving feedback helps students more easily identify mistakes in their own writing, as they develop better analytical abilities through objectively evaluating the work of others [1, 6]. Creative writing exercises are very important for developing written expression skills. Creativity allows students to express their thoughts freely and encourages them to approach the writing process in a more creative way. Writing on free topics, experimenting with poetry, short stories, and other writing formats enhances students' written expression skills and also strengthens their interest and motivation towards the writing process. Creative writing encourages students to express not only language structures but also their imagination and original ideas. This approach ensures that they develop their own styles, write on a broader range of topics, and make the writing process more enjoyable and engaging [5, 8]. For example, giving students the opportunity to write in different genres helps them master various writing styles and create diversity in their writing. Writing poetry encourages them to think about wordplay and rhythm, while writing stories helps students develop skills in plot construction, character creation, and story development. These kinds of creative writing exercises enhance students' language skills as well as their analytical and imaginative abilities, making their written expression more effective and personal. There is a close connection between reading and writing skills, and the parallel development of these two skills accelerates students' overall language abilities. Reading introduces students to new words, expressions, and language structures, creating a rich linguistic arsenal for them to use in their written expression. Inspired by the texts they read, students apply this newly learned language and style in their own writing. For example, after reading a particular text, a student might use more impactful expressions in their writing, similar to the artistic or academic language used in the text. The reading process also helps students understand different writing formats, as they read various writing styles and structures and apply this knowledge in their own writing [3, 4]. This parallel development also provides students with the opportunity to better grasp the richness and diversity of language. By expressing the new information and words they acquire from reading in written form, students are able to write more impactful texts. At the same time, the skills gained through the writing process further strengthen reading abilities, as students can benefit more from the material they read while analyzing, structuring, and discussing it during the writing process. This interplay enhances students' overall language skills and makes them better and more confident language users. Improving reading and writing skills in teaching English is one of the key steps in students' language learning process. The implementation of various approaches for developing these skills provides students with a broader linguistic landscape. Regular reading and writing, in addition to
enriching students' language knowledge, strengthen their vocabulary and language structures. Active learning methods help students develop their skills in analyzing, interpreting, and discussing texts. These approaches not only assist students in learning the language but also equip them with essential life skills such as analytical thinking, analysis, and debating. The feedback and revision process allows students to improve their writing skills, correct mistakes, and create more effective written works. Additionally, structured writing exercises and creative writing approaches expand students' thinking styles, enhance their writing abilities, and encourage them to write more creative and coherent texts. CONCLUSION Through mutual cooperation and continuous practice between students and teachers, reading and writing skills can be improved more effectively. Teachers can support students' development by providing regular and constructive feedback, ensuring the enhancement of their written work. At the same time, students can integrate the language knowledge they gain through the reading process into their writing by applying new ideas, thus acquiring stronger language skills. This interaction and continuous practice propel the parallel development of students' reading and writing abilities, making them better language users. In conclusion, improving reading and writing skills forms the foundation of success in teaching English, and it helps students become more confident and productive in their language learning journey.
